enabled the new faith to spread quickly, first throughout the Roman Empire and then across the entire known world (History of Christianity). Over the years, the Christian faith "divided
into three major branches"; Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and Protestant (History of Christianity). The Roman Catholic Church believes itself to be the successor of the Church "established in Rome soon
after Christs death. It traces its spiritual history to the early disciples of Jesus" (History of Christianity). The leader of the Catholic Church is the Pope, who "traces his offices
lineage back to St. Peter, the first Pope, one of Jesus disciples" (History of Christianity). The Roman Catholic Church was the only Christian religion until the fourth century, when the
first of the splits occurred (History of Christianity). At that time, the Eastern Orthodox Church broke away from the Roman Catholic Church; the split was due mostly to political factors,
