in California as they relate to the railroad. The articles are titled Henry George Expresses Skepticism About Railroads, 1868 and Frank Norris Excoriates the Railroad as "The Octopus," 1901.
History of California: The Railroad The railroad was something that held a great deal of promise for many people, and also something that seemed to embody ultimate destruction for
others. It was a machine that was going to lay tracks and connect the country so that materials and products and individuals could quickly move across the nation and yet
it was also an entity that destroyed land, silence, nature, and the inherent beauty and presence of the West for many people. In Henry George Expresses Skepticism About Railroads,
written in 1868, the author illustrates all the hopes and dreams possessed in the struggle to make the railroads from both sides connect, as a race ensued to bring civilization
and production to new regions. It is an excited essay that states many of the wondrous benefits that will surely come with the railroad. He talks about the greater economic
and political power people can possess, and many other grand images. But, at the same time he moves toward illustrating to the reader how they should likely also be wary.
He notes that "Amidst all our rejoicing and all our gratulation let us see clearly whither we are tending" and then illustrating how "And so the California of the future-the
