time for people to utilize film technology in the field of fictional presentations. As such documentary film stands as a very powerful piece of history socially, artistically, and otherwise. The
following paper examines the history and evolution of documentary film. History and Evolution of Documentary Film In most respects one can well
argue that documentary film, and perhaps film itself, began with the Lumiere brothers in the latter part of the 19th century. According to one author "Auguste and Louis Lumi?re stage
the worlds first public film screening on December 28, 1895 in the basement lounge of the Grand Cafe on the Boulevard des Capucines in Paris" (UC Berkeley - Media Resources
Center, 2007). The film they showed was, in essence, a documentary, or an actuality, film which depicted workers leaving the factory of the Lumiere brothers, a factory that produced film
material and machinery (Adventures in Cybersound, 2007). After this opening the brothers opened cinemas and "By 1897, the Lumi?res have a catalogue listing 358 different film strips; by 1898, the
number has increased to 1,000; by 1901, to 1,299 titles" (Adventures in Cybersound, 2007). This was the beginning of the documentary film.
As noted, documentary films were primarily called actuality films because they showed something in "actuality." It was a film form associated with the Victorian and Edwardian age, and age that
also, however saw "other nascent categories (some emerging from within the actuality genre) such as news reportage and early personal film-making" (Moving History, 2007).
