New World" (Davis, 2006; 1). Slavery was a powerful economic and social institution. While many people envision that it was not powerful in the Northern states, the truth is that
in the beginning of this nations growth slavery has always been powerful and accepted, North or South. While slavery never really had
the power in the North that it did in the South, slavery was still an incredible institution that many supported and encouraged. As such it has a very unique and
diverse history, and a history that still lingers in society today. From the 1770s to the Civil War of the 19th century, slavery existed, thrived, and caused problems. The following
paper examines slavery, the culture of slaves, the war to end slavery, and land and slavery. Slavery As the student requesting
this paper states, "During the early years of the British colonies in North America, people of African descent occupied a number of social positions, and slavery was not fully codified
in law; by the early 1700s, racial slavery was legally established, and the vast majority of the rapidly growing African population was permanently enslaved." Although some Africans did have some
level of success in society, they were few and far between and blacks were generally considered less than whites. They were brought over here as slaves and being that, from
the most basic perspective, they were dark skinned and clearly different from Europeans, they were put into a social category that is still evident even today.
