naturally transitioned into the pre-classical models and shared many of the same characteristics (Crawford, Brungardt, and Maughan, 2007). In the pre-classical era, leadership was still very authoritarian and
it was also task-oriented (Crawford, Brungardt, and Maughan, 2007). One of the major differences is that during Biblical times, leaders, such as kings and queens were believed to have been
divinely appointed to the role (Crawford, Brungardt, and Maughan, 2007). There was more of a concern for spirituality during the pre-classical leadership era but it was still based on fear
and death was especially feared (Crawford, Brungardt, and Maughan, 2007). Even the appointed leaders feared death if they insulted or angered any of the gods. There were other who helped
the leaders, such as military warriors, scribes, knights and others (Crawford, Brungardt, and Maughan, 2007). Still, like tribal leadership, leaders were feared because they were viewed as divinely appointed and
because they did not hesitate to use cruel measures to enforce laws and policies (Crawford, Brungardt, and Maughan, 2007). It is true some leaders were more benevolent but if one
considers the times, the Dark Ages, brutality was a common thing. The Hebrew leaders, Abraham, Joseph and Moses are well known to the world, they led their people from 1900
B.C. to 1300 B.C. (Devine, 2008). Their power came directly from God and they became judges as well as leaders (Devine, 2008). It was during this era that a
