of Nazi Germany and Fascism in Italy, but the similarities go beyond the obvious. First a look at the history prior to the nineteenth century can help explain the similarities
and differences. In Germany, with the death of Frankish king Louis the Pious, the lands for which he had control were divided as a part of the Treaty of
Verdun ("History of Germany," 2004). They were divided into a western portion, and this was the basis of later France; there was an eastern part as well (2004). The central
region would make up northern Italy and the lower countries, something that would be aligned with the Franco-German rivalry (2004). A newly emerging empire would be called the Holy Roman
Empire of the German Nation (2004). This nation would survive under the Kaiser until it would be dissolved in 1806 (2004). This was a time after the French
Revolution and military success of Napoleon I (2004). The French Revolution had an enormous impact on Europe in 1789 when it occurred and subsequently as the Napoleonic era would arise.
With Napoleon at the helm, after the King and Queen were beheaded, everything changed and this would have an effect on Germany and Italy. France was suddenly a power to
reckon with. During the Napoleonic era, many lands were conquered for France. Of course, Napoleon would not last very long in his role and eventually rule would be returned
to royalty. After Napoleon was defeated at Waterloo, the German states would form a loose confederation, which was called the German Confederation (2004). Soon, this new entity would
be in direct competition with Prussia and Austria (2004). The history of Italy has similar struggles and in fact, Austria loomed large in Italian history. Mastai brokered
