Europe in many ways. The following paper examines what made Charlemagne a historically significant figure. Historical Significance of Charlemagne "He was
born in 742, the son of Pepin the Short, King of the Franks, a kingdom which covered much of modern France plus portions of the Low Countries" (Hartman, 2006). It
was in the year of 771 that he came to the throne and at that point he began to conquer a great deal of the surrounding territory (Hartman, 2006). He
took portions of Germany, Spain and Italy (Hartman, 2006). In addition he was seen as a very powerful friend of the Christian church and Pope Leo III named him a
Roman Emperor, "initiating the Holy Roman Empire" (Hartman, 2006). At the time he died, however, this empire began to fall apart and was divided up into many small kingdoms (Hartman,
2006). As can be seen in the brief illustration, the empire was forever lost, and became something of a sham. But
one of the most important legacies left by Charlemagne involved literacy. Hartman (2006) states that with his influence, "there was cultural legacy in what has been called the Carolingian Renaissance,
and also the Carolingian Reforms" (Hartman, 2006). In Charlemagnes day literacy was something possessed by the class of priests "and the habit of
