Bolivar Definition: A military leader from Venezuela, helped to gain independence of Hispanic-Spanish America from Spain. Significance: Helped to establish free republic that would become Colombia; also helped to free Venezuela, Ecudaor, and Bolivia. 23. Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla Definition: A major figure in the Mexican War of Independence, fought in 1810, captured and executed in 1811. Significance: Helped to initiate the rebellion to free Mexico from Spanish rule; victory won after his death. 24. Gran Columbia Definition: Centralized government encompassing modern-day states of Brazil, Peru, Panama, Ecuador, Venezuela, and Colombia, as well as other coastal regions. Significance: This state existed as the outcome of freeing central America from Spanish rule; it was later contested by Federalists v. centralists. 25.
