the nation at the time. This paper uses the film to examine some of the historical documents that dealt with early American society. Discussion The film, like the play, is
likely to make a modern viewer extremely angry. Abigail Williams (Winona Ryder) tells lies in an attempt to win back John Proctor, but all she does is destroy Proctor, his
wife, and nearly 20 other innocent lives. There are a number of issues in Millers work that are worthy of attention: infidelity, truth, law, hysteria and Satanism. While its true
that Proctor and Abigail had an affair, which is immoral, Abigails lying makes it far worse. In her attempt to destroy Elizabeth Proctor, she sets a chain of events in
motion that ends up destroying everyone. The truth of the matter is nothing more sinister than Abigail wants John to resume their affair and he has no intention of betraying
his wife a second time. Her jealousy then is at the heart of the accusations she levels at Elizabeth. Perhaps the most disturbing element in the work is the
hysteria that surrounds the entire town. The play takes place in Salem, Massachusetts at the time of the witch trials; it seems as if the entire city has gone mad
and all that is necessary for a person to be found guilty is for the accusation to be made. The lunacy that sweeps through Salem is similar to that that
swept the United States in the wake of September 11. At the end of the play, one other character (Reverend Hale) has come to believe the girls are lying about
their demonic possession, but he cannot prevail against the overwhelming fear that motivates the rest of the village. Proctor finally signs a false confession that he trafficked with the
