Research Compiled by K. Von Huben 9/2010 Please Introduction A Rose for Emily is one of
the most frequently anthologized stories in English, and one of the most popular. Its blend of horror, mystery and irony are unique and compelling. This paper considers the historical aspects
of the setting used in the story. Discussion Literary elements include not only setting but plot, characterization, imagery, symbolism, foreshadowing and all the other individual pieces that go to make
up a coherent whole. William Faulkner is one of a select number of people (Flannery OConnor and Carson McCullers are two others) who are referred to as "Southern writers." These
writers are either born in the South or have an instinctive understanding of it; their stories have a distinct tone, one that often includes a touch of the macabre, a
strangeness and a sense of a lost history that identifies them strongly with this region of the country. The plot of A Rose for Emily is well known: Emily Grierson,
a woman who rouses strong emotion in the townspeople, becomes a recluse after her fathers death. It seems that shes going to marry, but her alleged fianc? disappears; when she
dies, the townspeople finally gain entrance to her home only to find that the fianc? never left-she murdered him and hes been there all the time, in a ghastly parody
