to pay his debts. Harry escapes North with his mother Eliza. Tom, while being transported South, meets Eva, saves her life, and is bought by St. Clare. Meanwhile, Harry and
his mother Eliza make it to a Quaker settlement. Tom integrates into the St. Clare household, becoming close to Eva, and invaluable to Mr. St. Clare. Stowe explores more themes
concerning slavery using various minor characters. After St. Clares death, his cruel wife sells Tom to Simon Legree and, in the other plot line, Harry, Eliza and her husband George
cross over into Canada to freedom. Tom encourages two of Legrees slaves, Cassy and Emmeline to escape. Visions of Christ and Eva, who is now deceased, give Tom strength to
withstand the cruelty of Legree, who vows to break Toms spirit and his faith. When he is near death, George Shelby arrives with money to purchase Tom but he is
too late. In his memory, George sets all the Shelby saves free, instructing them to remember Tom and live a pious Christian life, as he did. Stowes purpose was to
indicate that in all circumstances and conditions, slavery was wrong and could not be justified. Truth versus embellishment In this writers opinion, while Stowes narrative and writing style definitely
smack of soap opera, the basic facts that she relates relative to the horrors of slavery are accurate and relatively unembellished. For example, when George, Elizas husband argues with his
employer, Mr. Wilson, he successfully refutes his well-intentioned argument that he should not break the law and attempt to rescue his wife and child. George describes his past, how he
