the 1850s, "some historically-minded individuals were already beginning to recognize the value of preserving sites significant to the nations heritage" (Historic preservation in America, 2009). There were attempts at preservation
in scattered locations, but it was at Mount Vernon that the idea of historic preservation, as well as an organization dedicated to it, really took root (Historic preservation in America,
2009). The Mount Vernon Ladies Association was created by Ann Pamela Cunningham in 1853 to "save the home of George Washington" (Historic preservation in America, 2009). When the projects started,
the "Mansion was dilapidated, and only three objects belonging to George Washington were left on the property" (Historic preservation in America, 2009). Since the founding of the preservation organization over
150 years ago, it has worked to restore the property to the way it looked in 1799 (Historic preservation in America, 2009). The groups success in renovating Washingtons home "propelled
the Association into the forefront of historic preservation, where it has served as a model for other preservation projects and organizations that have followed" (Historic preservation in America, 2009).
Various groups and organization have become involved in historic preservation over the years. The federal government concentrated on preserving national land and creating the national parks, while the private sector
tended to work toward saving buildings, and in some cases, such as Williamsburg, Virginia, entire communities (Historic preservation in America, 2009). In 1949, the "National Trust for Historic Preservation was
