also made possible from the support that I receive from my family. Anglo sources on Hispanic culture acknowledge the Hispanic family as a "close-knit group and the most important
social unit" (Clutter and Nieto); however, such dry statements of fact do not convey the emotionality and intimacy, the warmth and support, that being part of a Hispanic family
entails. While Anglo parents will bemoan the burdens that children impose, one never hears this sort of talk in a Hispanic family. Because of children, Hispanic families "resolve to set
higher goals and make greater achievements" (Cueves de Caissie), which aptly describes the reality of my life, as I strive to achieve more because of my family. My long
term goals are to obtain a degree in civil engineering, get a job, etc.; in other words, all of the normal goals of mainstream American culture. However, these goals and
the way I go about achieving them will always remain intimately tied to the foundation of my life, which is my family. I contribute to my community by participating
in an after-school program that aids non-English speaking students with the requirements of their academic studies. This program helps English as a Second Language (ESL) students translate their homework and
tutors, such as myself, also help the students in understanding and assimilating basic skills and fundamental academic subject matter. This experience has taught me a great deal. First of
