in the life of its protagonist, an Hispanic gang leader named Santana (Olmos). The movie begins with the poor adaptive skills of Hispanic youth and then portrays gang involvement, extreme
violence and sexual abuse. As moviemakers often exaggerate for dramatic effect, the question arises as to how much of what this film portrays is realistic. How does the reality of
Hispanic life in the US compare to the film? The journey of Santana from youth to hardened criminal is portrayed as beginning with the Zoot Suit Riots in Los Angeles
in 1943. In the early 1940s, Mexican American young men liked to deck themselves out in wide brim hats, baggy pants, and long-tailed coats. This fashion statement was referred to
as the "zoot suit." In June 1943, Los Angeles witnessed Americans sailors, armed with make-shift weapons, swarming into Hispanic neighborhoods, where they assaulted anyone wearing a zoot suit
(Zoot Suit Riots). Hispanics were dragged into the street from restaurants, bars, wherever they happened to be, and stripped and beaten (Zoot Suit Riots). This film portrays Santanas parent being
brutalized in this event and the historical record shows that such a background would be historically accurate. Alienated against society, Santana forms a gang with some of his friends as
soon as he reaches adolescence (Theodore). Raised in poverty, these boys do not seem to be aware that a better life is possible. Current statistics show that poverty is a
