affect this population, their cultural perceptions, attitudes, beliefs, values and behaviors. Research shows that Latinos are particularly at risk for a number of negative psychosocial problems that are detrimental
to mental health, such as poverty, low educational achievement and substance abuse. To address their needs effectively requires cultural competence, which begins with the recognition that Latinos are not a
homogenous group, as this population consists of a variety of national origins (Furman, et al, 2009). Possible ethnic and racial backgrounds may include European (Spanish), Aztec, Mayan, Incan, Caribbean Indian
or African (Furman, et al, 2009). Cultural customs and the dialects of Spanish spoken differ among the various national origins. Many Latinos have issues associated with work satisfaction and
the conditions under which they work, as a large percentage of this population can be categorized as part of the working poor (Furman, et al, 2009). A strong work ethic
is prevalent among Latinos; however, due to low levels of education, many do not possess the job skills necessary to obtain employment that pays a living wage (Furman, et al,
2009). Competent mental services that meet the needs of Latinos should have "flexible hours, address co-morbidities... provide realistic referrals to other services [and] combine physical care with mental care" (Furman,
et al, 2009, p. 170). Dupree, et al (2010) conducted a study that investigated the barriers and preferences regarding mental health care services among Latinos. This revealed that older
adults prefer consulting their family doctor, and subscribe to the attitude that ones problems are personal and should be kept to oneself. Younger participants were more likely to report that
