As one of the nations of Central America, Guatemala is a small country bordered by both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. It is
near the equator and therefore tropical, which has implication for staffing issues in itself. We say that time moves more slowly in developing nations, but we all physically move
more slowly in tropical climates. The coastal areas are warm, humid and lush, and they attract a significant tourist trade. The interior portions can be quite arid, dusty
and hot, while others are graced with more rain and lush plant growth. Guatemala has been rather peaceful in recent years, but it
has been one of the most unstable governments in Central America in the past. It still suffers the effects of a 36-year guerilla war that ended in 1996, which
killed 100,000 people and created more than a million refugees (Guatemala). In this environment, mere survival has been the focus of most individuals.
National literacy rates stand at about 63 percent (Guatemala), limiting the ability of citizens to progress much beyond unskilled or semiskilled jobs. With per capita GDP of only
