The years leading up to Word War I were full of clues that the
war was soon to erupt. Many of those clues were relatively subtle but even a casual visitor to Europe during this time could likely discern that Germany had a
mindset leaning toward troop engagement. All it would take was just the littlest bit of provocation. An American visiting Germany in
the years preceding World War I would have to observe that the country had formed one of the largest and best-trained military forces in the world. Also apparent to
the visitor should be the heated interaction and competition over resources that was beginning to unfold among the European powers and the growing ethnic and nationalistic tension.
Tensions in Germany in particular before the outbreak of war were phenomenal (Arthur, 2004). There was a tremendous sense of expectancy among the
German people (Arthur, 2004). Many actually wanted war (Arthur, 2004). Interestingly enough Kaiser Wilhelm II was actually one of the primary reasons the war erupted. It was he,
after all, that encouraged Austria-Hungary to take revenge against Serbia for the 1914 assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. While it might have not been clearly apparent to a visitor
