before 1965, when Hinduism first appears in the U.S. ("Hinduism in the United States," 2006). At the same time, spiritual leaders such as Henry Steel Olcott lived during the nineteenth
century (Leithart, 2005). In the 1880s, he tried to import both Hinduism and Buddhism to the United States (Leithart, 2005). Olcotts influence was short lived. It was in 1907
that riots sprang up to protest against Hinduism but in 1965, the Immigration and Nationality Services Act was passed and that changed everything ("Hinduism in the United States," 2006). This
law would allow Hindus to immigrate to the United States and so they did; preachers came too and soon, Americans were made aware of Hinduism ("Hinduism in the United States,"
2006). The International Society for Krishna Consciousness was founded in 1965 ("Hinduism in the United States," 2006). Today, a variety of Gurus or sadhus and live in the United
States ("Hinduism in the United States," 2006). There are pockets of Hindu families around the nation, and one such community where there exists a great many practicing Hindus is Vedic
City in Iowa ("Hinduism in the United States," 2006). It seems that many people in the West are at least curious about Hinduism. There is not a very large
population in the United States of practicing Hindus, but there are some, and it pays to explore their traditions and beliefs. What is Hinduism exactly? Hinduism is a unique
religion that is quite different from the usual Judeo-Christian fare. In fact, one might say that things revealed in religions such as Christianity or even Islam are very different from
