used metaphorically, but a pilgrimage is an actual physical change in scenery. It signifies the assembly of people and the taking of a trip. Under the heading of pilgrimage people
travel to places where ancient rituals had once taken place. They feel the earth, experience the atmosphere, and renew their spirits. They consider their spiritual goals, some of which are
fulfilled in the context of the trip. In Hinduism, as in other religions, pilgrimage is very important. Pilgrimage again goes back to ancient times. While pilgrimage has always been
a part of Hinduism, and signifies good health and renewal, it was dangerous at some point in time. For example, the practice of bathing and other water rituals which would
take place during a pilgrimage would spread cholera during the nineteenth century (Arnold, 1993). Today, obviously, there is a reduced amount of fear in respect to the use of water.
Water is often central to these pilgrimages so it is an important factor in the scheme of things. Again, while in part, the use of water during these trips signifies
a cleansing, it is a historical fact that the pilgrimages actually inadvertently spread disease. Still, there is little negative about the pilgrimage other than this small fact. A bit
of information about Hinduism will help to shed light on why pilgrimage is so important to the Hindu. Hinduism is a unique religion that is quite different from the typical
Judeo-Christian model that most people in the West experience. One important fact about Hinduism is that is it pluralistic (Mugilan, 1998). That is, one can be a Hindu and
