certain universal truths upon which all the major religions agree. For instance, both Hinduism and Christianity have as one of their basic beliefs the conception that behind the physical world
of change there is one universal, unchanging, everlasting spirit. Christians refer to this spirit as "God" and Hindus use the word "Brahman", but the concept is very similar. Hinduism first
developed on the subcontinent of India. A full 90% of Hinduisms 800 million followers live today in the Republic of India. Some scholars believe that the origins of Hinduism go
back to when pastoral Aryan tribes piled over the Hindu Kush from Central Asia and mixed with the urban civilizations then flourishing in the Indus Valley (Harris PG). A
wide variety of beliefs and practices are encompassed by this religion, many of which actually contradict each other (Elder CD-ROM). While not all Hindus share the same religious belief, of
the worlds major religions it is probably the most tolerant of diversity. Unfortunately, this cannot be said of Christianity. Christians have been fighting Christians for centuries over the smallest differences
in dogma. Unlike Christianity, Hinduism did not have a single founder whose teachings could then be spread by disciples. Hinduism also lacks the hierarchal structure found in the Christian
religion. Its an ancient religion which reached its present form around the time that Christ was alive although the roots of Hinduism are much older. There is evidence that
some of the gods worshiped by Hindus today were also worshiped by their ancestors nearly 4000 years ago (Elder CD-ROM). There is a great deal of difference between forms of
