There are a number of similarities between Hinduism and Buddhism: for instance, they are both broad philosophical systems which look to establish a definition of existence. However, there are also
several significant differences. Hinduism is concerned with the individuals place in the world and in society, especially in terms of ones responsibility to ones caste and to right living.
Buddhism focuses more on the way in which right living will allow the individual to transcend the sufferings of the world. Hinduism is distinguished by the existence of the
caste system and tends towards a fatalism which reinforces the dominant ideology and mediates against individual advancement, whilst Buddhism is more concerned with the way in which the individual can
achieve personal enlightenment. Whilst Hinduism is based upon a complex and interrelated social and religious hierarchy, which ensures that society remains strictly stratified, Buddhism is less concerned with the way
in which society is structured and more with the enlightenment and spiritual development of the individual.
Theravada Buddhism was the original form, which was based on lengthy meditation and required
a monastic existence; since it was not accessible to the majority of the people, a new variant, Mahayana Buddhism, developed in the first century AD and its adherents claimed to
be reviving the true and original form of Buddhas teachings, maintaining that there were secret writings which had been hidden for centuries and on which the tenets of Mahayana were
