if one is to be considered a good and righteous Hindu. As a means by which to plot out ones complete mortal existence, these four states of life act
as a guide for those to follow with considerable ease. Each stage is broken down by various times in ones life in order for the Hindus to anticipate each
forthcoming segment. It can be argued that the parallels to American existence are quite far removed when it comes to the four stages of life, in that there does
not exist any such standard as this to follow. Indeed, being raised in America means to abandon such strict structure and seek out a life as individual and unique
as possible. The first of the four stages is the brahmacharya ashrama, which continues until the age of twenty-five, at which point the
young man leaves home to stay with the Brahmin. Upon becoming the householder during the grihastha ashrama and continuing until age fifty, the man marries, has a family, earns
a living and helps those around him. It is the point at which a mans hair turns white and his face shows wrinkles that he is to seek refuge
as a hermit in the forest, representing stage three: the vanprastha ashrama. With age comes wisdom, as is apparent by stage four, the sannyasa ashrama. Completely devoting his
life over to God, this wandering holy man has since abandoned all of his mortal and worldly possessions in order to focus all of his attentions upon moksha (release). Krishnas
