One of the most important elements of this particular religion is the pilgrimage. There are many different pilgrimage sites and all of them hold special importance for one reason or
another. The following paper examines the Hindu religion in general, laying a foundation for understanding the pilgrimage, and then discusses the pilgrimage, its importance, and its general meaning.
The Hindu Religion The region of India is a very rich one that is very ancient and is quite reliant on many "religious
and cultural patterns" (Gray, 2005). Its history is long lived and has involved many different cultures and religious ideals. The religion we know as Hinduism today "did not actually appear
until the centuries preceding the Christian era" (Gray, 2005). In many ways it is a combination of various past religious endeavors or beliefs. Gray (2005) indicates that it "is an
aggregation of the religious beliefs and practices deriving from the Vedism and fertility cults of the Harappan peoples, and the animistic, shamanistic, and devotional practices of the widely varying, rural-dwelling
indigenous cultures of south, central, and eastern India" (Gray, 2005). In addition this religion was further added to by the religions known
as Jainism and Buddhism (Gray, 2005). In light of these facts we can see that the Hindu religion is one that is incredibly diverse as well as complex, involving animistic
worship as well as the intricate Brahmanic rituals which are generally practiced at places of pilgrimage (Gray, 2005). India, in effect, is the oldest nation that possess a long standing
pilgrimage tradition, a pilgrimage tradition that is complex and yet incredibly simple in its purpose of connecting the pilgrim with the spiritual world (Gray, 2005). The Pilgrimage
