"samsara," which represents the "cycle of birth, life and death," when a single revolution of the wheel is completed, "life begins again with rebirth" (Knierim). Furthermore, both religions regard karma
as the force that propels the rebirth/reincarnation cycle. Karma, in Sanskrit, literally means "action" (Knierim). However, it connotes not only actions taken but also the "fruits or consequences that arise from
these acts. Hindus and Buddhists regard karma in a similar manner, but Hindus make finer distinctions in regards to karma, defining it as "present karma, latent karma and future karma"
(Knierim). Karma encompasses the reality that human actions operate to cause a "continuous chain reaction of cause and effect," with good actions bringing about good effects and bad actions, bad
effects (Tsuji). Hinduism The term "Hindu" is actually a word invented by outsiders to Indian culture to describe the "mosaic of religion" that they encountered on the sub-continent (Thuruthiyil).
Therefore, a Hindu can believe in "monotheism or polytheism or pantheism...even atheism," as there are orthodox schools of Hinduism that focus on the "liberation of the soul without being preoccupied
