However, despite their differences both companies have a number commonalities. In both cases the companies are demonstrating growth and have a heavy reliance on the leverage of resources, location of facilities, the development of customer loyalty and perception of value. Both companies seek to compete based on differentiation. With Hilton as a market leader in the UK, in a joint position with Whitbread, and Asda in second position to Tescos in the supermarket industry, both companies may be argued as being successful. Both companies are showing increasing levels of revenue and profits. However, this does not mean there is not room to improvement. Both companies have the desire to increase thousand profit and increase their market share. In looking at the way this may be achieved as and Hilton can learn from each other, as the can learn from Hilton in the way customer loyalty can be developed, and Hilton may learn from Asda in the way marketing can increase market share. 1. Introduction to Sectors The retail and the hospitality industry serve different demands in the consumer market. However, as well as the numerous differences, in business terms there are also a number of commonalities. The hostility industry is based mainly on the provision of services, whereas the retail sector has its foundation in the supply of goods.
