The range of brands allows the firm to compete effectively in different segments of the market; both full service hotels and focused or limited service hotels which employ more than 130,000 staff worldwide (Hilton Worldwide, 2010). The history for the firm indicates a strong growth strategy which has been worth the firm for many years. The Hilton Hotels history starts in 1919 when Conrad Hilton buys his first hotel, this in Cisco, Texas and called the Mobley (Hilton Worldwide, 2010). In 1925 he expands and builds a hotel carrying the Hilton name, making the Hilton in Dallas, the first real Hilton hotel. The expansion outside of Texas started in 1938 when the Sir Francis Drake in San Francisco was added to the companys portfolio (Hilton, 2006). By 1943 the company is the first coast to coast hotel chain in the US when they purchased the Roosevelt and the Plaza, and then in 1945 there is the purchase of Palmer House and the Stevens in New York(Hilton Worldwide, 2010). It was 1946 when the company is listed on the New York Stock exchange with Conrad Hilton as the president and in 1949 when the company leased the Waldorf Astoria and started its international expansion opening in Porto Rico with the Caribe Hilton.
