teetering along with the US economy shortly before the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, but for reasons other than those the economy was experiencing. Travel had made such remarkable gains during the long period of economic expansion in the 1990s that the industry had added significant capacity. September 11 changed all that, at least for the short term. Hilton was adversely affected as well, but it appears not to have suffered as much as its competitors. Industry Overview With many more available rooms, the industry still was doing well but was experiencing a decline in revenues per available room (RevPAR). In the economic recovery still underway, Enz and Canina (2002) report that "Not all hotels participated equally in the recent industry plunge--brought on by both recession and terrorism--and not all are recovering at the same rate" (p. 41). Enz and Canina (2002) note that "By almost any measure the U.S. lodging industry as a whole was hard hit by the events of September 11, 2001" (p. 41). Those hardest-hit were "luxury hotels in major cities, while those in secondary and tertiary markets reported a more muted effect" (Enz and Canina, 2002; p. 41). Smith and Lesure (1999) present a much different view of the industry in their 1999 overview, reporting that the "lodging industry is expected to enjoy relative success, at least in the next few years, due to strong market fundamentals" (p. 18).
