Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 5 page book review of F.H. Hilliard's The Buddha, The Prophet and The Christ. This book offers a comparison between three of the world's principal religions -- Buddhism, Christianity, and Islam. Hilliard makes the point in his introduction that the differences between these religions are often misunderstood, and they are frequently misrepresented (7). While Hilliard readily admits that these religions differ in fundamental respects, he also asserts that "they are not nearly so far from one another as them seem" (7). The sections that Hilliard presents on each religion more then substantiate this assertion. No additional sources cited.

Christianity, and Islam. Hilliard makes the point in his introduction that the differences between these religions are often misunderstood, and they are frequently misrepresented (7). While Hilliard readily admits that
these religions differ in fundamental respects, he also asserts that "they are not nearly so far from one another as them seem" (7). The sections that Hilliard presents on each

entitled "The Sources." Each of these religions has sacred texts that outline the lives of their originators, their teachings and ministries. This is followed by accounts of the births of
Buddha, Muhammad, and Jesus. Supernatural circumstances surround each birth according to the sacred texts of each religion. When the Buddha was born (around 560 B.C.), his mother received confirmation
of his divinity from four gods who placed him before her telling her to rejoice (25). Two streams of water fell from the sky, one of cold water and one
of hot water, which washed the newborn baby and his mother (25). According to later versions of Buddhas birth, he was not born as other human beings, but descended from
heaven by his own choice (26). Although has the section on Islam next, chronologically, Christianity came next with Christs birth now estimated to have been during 4 B.C., rather
then 1 A.D. (121). After discussing the sources for Christian belief, Hilliard relates the well-known supernatural events that accompanied Jesus birth to the Virgin Mary. Muhammad was born roughly
500 years later, about 570 A.D. (76). Like Christ and Buddha, it is part of Islamic belief that Muhammad pre-existed his birth. When he was born, the midwife who attended
