were surprised when Hillary Clinton announced that she would be running for the office of senator from New York. The Clintons had no connections with New York and had
never lived there before Bill Clintons term as president. Choosing a home in New York shortly before the end of Bill Clintons second term heralded the Clintons future plans.
Hillary Clinton entered the campaign with both advantages and disadvantages. Members of her party frequently proclaimed her to be "the smartest woman
in America," and she certainly gained some measure of sympathy from supporters in the wake of her husbands personal activities (Mercurio, 2000a). Rick Lazio would prove to be a
formidable opponent, and the Lazio campaign spent lavishly throughout. Strategies The campaign was close to the end, so much so that one observer
wrote in mid-October, "The presidential candidates and the New York Senate candidates have had two debates and all bets are off in both races" (Mercurio, 2000). Early on, Clintons
campaign management sought to discredit Lazio through emphasizing his association with Newt Gingrich (Nagourney, 2000), but they eventually abandoned that approach as being irrelevant to the current campaign.
New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani was much less of a threat to Clinton. Staunchly conservative, Giuliani was and remains the antithesis of the highly
liberal position held by Clinton. Lazio, on the other hand, is much more moderate in his political views and had the potential of gaining the conservative Democrat vote.
If Clinton were to win, her campaign would have to preserve "the numbers," and they would not be able to afford losing any Democratic votes to Republicans.
