emphasizes the careful balance that must exist between science and the hands-on applications involved in insuring patient welfare. Peplaus theory is particularly interesting, therefore, when analyzed according to the criteria
identified by Monti and Tingen (1999). These researchers identify the basic metaparadigms of nursing as: person, environment, nursing, and health (Monti and Tingen, 1999). These researchers point
out that nursing processes and goals go hand in hand with such considerations as "respect for persons, caring, autonomy of persons, health promotion, illness prevention, professional competence, and ethical conduct"
(Monti and Tingen, 1999, p. 64). Peplaus Theory of Interpersonal Relations has many applications in advanced practice nursing. It is
particularly applicable to the specific advanced practice role data collection. Advanced practice nurses are not only responsible for the collection of clinical data but also for the collection of
personal data such as patient family history, pain assessment, and symptom descriptions. This role can be complicated by problems in interpersonal relations. Nurses must assess person and environment
in relation to their impact on health. Both person and environment can vary according to a number of factors including ethnicity, race, culture, socioeconomic background, and educational attainment.
Peplaus theory of interpersonal relations addresses each of these metaparadigms equally. Peplaus Theory of Interpersonal Relations finds particular basis when nurses are dealing
