in many businesses experiencing continuous growth over the years, the example high school examined here has been affected by changes on all fronts over only the past decade. There are concerns that did not exist in the past, and recent changes in gains requirements under No Child Left Behind (NCLB) have further complicated management at the school level. The purpose here is to assess current structure at a single high school and to propose another that would be more beneficial for both staff and students. Current Structure In this high school of 1,100 students, there is a principal, two vice principals, two assistant principals, three guidance counselors and several administrative support staff. Each area of study - i.e., English, foreign languages, math, social studies, applied sciences and others - has a department "chair" filled by a faculty member within the department s/he chairs. This department chair serves as a point of liaison between teachers and administration for items of a non-urgent nature and for general information dissemination. Every teacher has access to any member of administration at any time. This particular school has a vocational education division that operates on the campus but in many respects operates separately from the rest of the school. One of the vice principals has full operational and academic responsibility for the vocational division, to the point that the divisions offices are separate from those of the overall school entity. The vocational area offers classes in auto mechanics and woodworking of course, but it also offers a medical technology area that prepares students for license testing for a variety of allied health careers.
