who drop out of high school, are individuals with problems, young people who on drugs perhaps or simply individuals who do not care. However, there are many more factors that
are related to how and why people stay in school, or opt for things like a GED, or simply drop out. The following paper offers a tutorial look at the
students experience with staying in school. High School Experience Many students, especially like the one requesting this paper, look at high
school as pointless. There is a sense that it is offering nothing, is boring, and during the teenaged years there is a very strong desire to essentially break out on
ones own and give up on high school which often seems like an institution that is useless. In such situations it seems that one of the most important realities is
the feeling of being "engaged" and intrigued by school. As one author notes, "engaged students reported more positive perceptions of competence, autonomy, and relatedness in the school setting than less
engaged students did" (Connell, 1995; 41). In this particular situation the student pushed themselves despite the lack of obviously feeling engaged by school. The next few paragraphs will be a
hypothetical first person description of what it may be like. "I really did not care about high school and thought there was
