effective in a changing world" (Buchanan & McCalman, 1989, p.1). In a 1980s study described by authors, high performance work groups had been introduced (Buchanan & McCalman, 1989). Whether
a business uses work groups, or takes a team approach, the high performance ideal is a theme that runs through both concepts. In regard to high performance work groups
and teams, there are different ways that organizations might integrate such elements. Traditionally, groups will physically meet, but in the 2000s, things are different. For example, with globalization, everything has
changed and innovations have altered the way that high performance teams are used (Hanlan, 2004). With the use of virtual communication and Internet connectivity, virtual teams are used and real
time integration is a given (Hanlan, 2004). The strategy changes as one must consider time zones and be able to converse with people with the use of equipment as opposed
to calling on the phone or walking down the hall. Virtual teams communicate mostly by email and instant messaging as well as in the context of virtual meetings. In some
way, the virtual team can meet at a moments notice because logistics are not in the way, but sometimes it is more difficult to track down key members of a
team when their whereabouts are not always known. Therefore, a team leader who is in charge of a virtual team will want to be well organized and make sure that
