Information regarding high blood pressure are important to the nursing profession because the effects are far-reaching for the patient. The nurse is the first health care provider to recognize a
problem with blood pressure and will inform the practicing physician to assure this symptom/condition is not overlooked. Article #1: Boutain, Doris M. Discourses of Worry, Stress and high Blood
Pressure in Rural South Louisiana. This qualitative study, which is appropriately titled, explored the relationship of worry and stress to high blood pressure. The study was based on social theories,
African American studies and critical discourse concepts. The population included 30 African American men and women, evenly divided between the genders. All participants had high blood pressure. Participants were each
interviewed twice during a four-month period of time. Boutain obtained approval of the study from the institution review boards and also convened a committee in the community to discuss
the purpose of the study. The purpose of the study was to analyze the accounts provided by participants in order to gain insight regarding the details of their normal everyday
life and health concerns. Boutain sets the stage by reporting that one in four adults in the United States has high blood pressure. Furthermore, high blood pressure is 50
percent more common in African Americans than in Caucasians. That makes this topic of significant importance to discuss and study. Boutain also points out that despite the advances in detecting
