ruled supreme as the backbone of the US economy, W. Edwards Deming was preaching the gospel of quality. In the 1986 book that listed his 14 Points he condemned
the use of slogans such as "do it right the first time." Deming (1986) wrote, "A lofty ring it has. But how could a man make it right
the first time when the incoming material is off-gauge, off-color, or otherwise defective, or if his machine is not in good order..." (p. 66) or if even one of several
other deficiencies existed. One of the most dependable defining boundaries classifying types of work is the degree of control that the individual has over what s/he does or how
s/he does it. Autonomy at Work McDonalds still makes use of one of the foundational concepts of Frederick Taylors scientific management, the time
trial. The company can predict how much time and even how many physical movements are required to produce and wrap a burger, or produce a basket full of fries.
It is one of the tools the company used to gain efficiencies that other fast food restaurants did not have; it is also the tool that prevented McDonalds customers
from being able to have a burger "their way" as Burger King so frequently pointed out. Those required to perform specific tasks in
specific ways have virtually no autonomy, little if any control and relatively low job satisfaction. On the other hand, those with the ability to exercise much broader autonomy or
