website www.hp.com is a general portal to a large website which gives access to the consumer to a range of services, the ability to buy the goods, contact the company,
find information and even obtain a free online class in using IT. The website is very large, but the speed of download is aided but small file size pictures
and a well laid out site make it fast to load and easy to use. Research has indicated that slow to load pages are one of the first
elements of a company web site that may deter visitors and purchases (Krishnamurthy, 2001) The front page has links to the main sites which may be seen as micro sites
of their own that also has menus to make navigation easy. The business model that the company is using is that of direct sales to the customer. However, these
are not pushing customised sales as seen with Dell (Dell, 2006), these are the showcasing the sale of preconfigured units with a wide range of choices However, there is the
ability to customise the computers and as such w may also argue this is a web site set up to compete directly with Dell, emulating a similar model of sales.
In terms of the way the company has set up generally business have two choices when it comes to selling on the
internet they can try and integrate it with the bricks and mortar operation or they separate it completely (Caffrey, 2004), HP have separated this out, and as such the site
does not play a support function for the buying of goods through retailers. This maybe seen as risky as it may alienate some of the retailers but as a major
