judgment on one of its members. This paper discusses some of the issues raised by the novel. Discussion First, its no secret that Hawthorne was fond of his main character,
Hester Prynne. She is portrayed as a warm and caring person with simple human failings, much more likeable than the townspeople who persecute her. When she first appears, she stands
in sharp contrast to her surroundings. She is to be released from jail, and the crowd waiting for her is in "sad-coloured garments," waiting before a door "heavily timbered with
oak, and studded with iron spikes" (Hawthorne, 1997). That is the jail, which Hawthorne calls an "ugly edifice" situated next to a lot full of weeds. But beside the door
"was a wild rose-bush, covered, in this month of June, with its delicate gems" (Hawthorne, 1997). Hester herself is the rose bush while her resentful townspeople are the ugly building
and the weeds. In the crowd are a number of women who are not satisfied with the sentence; some would like to see Hester put to death for her "crime";
their vehement rejection of her suggests that they are jealous of her youth and beauty, and of her courage in daring to love the man she wanted. Then she appears;
