In presenting Siddharthas journey, Hesse addresses spiritual truths and commonalities of human experience that cause Siddharthas experiences to resonate with the reader. This is evident in regards to major themes in the novel, such as the nature of wisdom, the nature of enlightenment, the importance of love, the importance of the middle way and that realization that all of life is divine and a totality that cannot be separated from its source. Nature of wisdom: Siddhartha "struggled in vain with his Self when was a Brahmin and an ascetic. Too much knowledge hindered him" (Hesse 99). There is a tendency to confuse knowledge with experience in Western culture, as if the wisdom of maturity can be gained from a book. Parents would like to protect their children from all the ills and traumas of society and therefore shelter their offspring. However, the idea that one can obtain maturity in this manner rather like thinking that it is possible to teach a child to ride a bicycle, by reading about it. Eventually, one has to get on the bicycle and experience a few falls. At this point, the student researching this topic should relate some incident/knowledge that he/she gained from personal experience versus formal education. Nature of enlightenment: While related to the nature of knowledge, Hesse portrays Siddhartha as initially concerned solely with knowledge that pertain to his search for Nirvana. However, he eventually gives up an ascetic life when he realizes that enlightenment is not something can be conferred on someone by another.
