zoster, a condition commonly referred to as shingles. Many people are aware of this condition and the risk, but it should not be confused with herpes simplex. Herpes zoster is
caused by a particular virus and can only arise in individuals who have had the chickenpox in the past. About 300 thousand new cases crop up in the United States
each year (Norman, 2001). It is generally most severe and most commonly discovered in patients over the age of 60 (Norman, 2001). Herpes zoster, or shingles, is causes by a
virus. It is aligned with the varicella-zoster virus, an infection that can also cause chickenpox (Dutton, 2004). What happens is that once a person gets chickenpox or varicella, the disease
goes away, but it actually lies dormant in the dorsal root ganglia as well as the sensory ganglia in the cranial nerves (Dutton, 2004). Hence, someone has chickenpox, but the
disease components are still a part and parcel of the human body. If down the road the virus is reactivated, herpes zoster occurs (Dutton, 2004). A person cannot get herpes

a rash that starts as papules and erythematous mascules which develops into pustules (Dutton, 2004). Clearly, the signs and symptoms of herpes zoster are unmistakable. With a patient history and
a review of the symptoms, it is not difficult to diagnose this disease. Of course, a physicians diagnosis may be confirmed with the use of a culture (Neville, Damm, Allen
