within patriarchal Afghanistan culture and the oppression of the Taliban. While both of these protagonists are heroic, this examination of the novel will focus on Mariam as the epitome of
heroism, as throughout her childhood she bears the brunt of discrimination as a harami (bastard) and throughout her adult life she is subjected to the anger and domination of a
patriarchal husband. Mariams final act of heroism, however, sacrificing herself to ensure the safety of her friends is one of the finest examples of heroism in all of literature.
The novel begins in Mariams childhood. She is the illegitimate child of a wealthy man, Jalil, who cast her mother, Nana, out of his home rather than marry her
and add her to his household, which consisted of three wives and nine legitimate children. He does, however, acknowledge Mariam as his child, supports her with a stipend, and visits
her once a week. Nana is bitter, but Mariam loves her father and cherishes her time with him. She faces the bitterness that her mother directs towards her throughout her
childhood with equanimity and heroic fortitude. For example, when Nana recounts the horror of Mariams birth and what she endured, the child apologizes, never considering the "unfairness of apologizing for
the manner of her own birth" (Hosseini 11). On Mariams birthday, Jalil promises to take her to the movies, but never arrives, so Mariam goes into town looking for
him. When she comes home, she finds that Nana has committed suicide by hanging herself. She goes to live with her father, who claims that this is a burden on
