in Homers epic poems, "The Iliad" and "The Odyssey." For the men of ancient Greece, there were few titles more coveted than that of hero. What constituted a
hero during the time of Homer? For one thing, he had to be a successful warrior, because the Greeks were almost always at war with their neighboring territories.
He had to be willing to give his life for his countrymen, with bravery and valor. To emerge victorious in combat, the warrior had to be strong and competent,
a leader capable of protecting his territory and his men. In both "The Iliad" and "The Odyssey," heroism is often conveyed through the use of animal symbolism.
The lion is the most popular symbol of heroism in "The Iliad" (Clarke 137). In a memorable passage from Book XVII, Homer describes a fellow soldier standing guard
over his compatriots fallen glory with vivid symbolism befitting a heroic gesture: "Often, lion stands over his whelps if hunters have come upon him in a forest when he is
with his little ones- in the pride and fierceness of his strength" (Homer 188). Like the lion, a hero must be fearless but also serve as a protector to
the weak and defender of his territory and do whatever he must in the name of survival. A ravenous Odysseus is described by Homer in Book VI of "The
Odyssey": "As he said this he crept from under his bush, and broke off a / bough covered with thick leaves to hide his nakedness. He looked / like some
lion of the wilderness that stalks about exulting in his strength and defying both wind and rain; his eyes glare as he prowls" (Homer "The Odyssey" 50). Heroism is
