May 22, 1844 in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania, which is now part of Pittsburgh (Mary Cassatt biography). Although she grew up in Pennsylvania, she traveled extensively and lived for four years
in Germany and France as a child (Mary Cassatt biography). In 1861, the same year that the American Civil War began, she "entered the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts"
(Mary Cassatt biography). Ironically, she went to study painting in Paris in 1865, the year the war ended (Mary Cassatt biography). Her life seems to have been punctuated by war,
since it was the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War in 1870 that sent her home to America (Mary Cassatt biography). However, she returned to Europe the following year where she
"traveled and studied in Italy, Spain, Belgium, and France before settling permanently in Paris in 1875" (Mary Cassatt biography). She remained in France for the rest of her life, despite
the fact that was not apparently very fond of the French (Mary Cassatt biography). The atmosphere in Paris in the late 1800s was "enormously progressive" and the city was "undergoing
