It is the story of the change in society from Romanticism to Enlightenment, the story of good and evil with Billy representing a Christ like figure, and a story that examines the choices we often make in a fair and rational society, to mention but a few of the possible themes within the novel. In addition to possible themes, the style and presentation of Melville is also something that can be examined from many angles. Bearing these two analytical fields in mind the following paper examines two different chapter, or sections from chapters, as they present us with the style that was Melvilles and a powerful theme related to Billy Budd. The paper examines Chapter 1 as it presents us with the classic and powerful style that is Melvilles, and Chapter 15 which is a chapter that truly provides us with the innocent nature of Billy. Chapter 1 The first chapter, like any initial chapter in a book, presents us with the particular style of the writer. With Melville we quickly note that he is one of the few who can pull off incredibly long sentences that almost seem to ramble. Many argue that he actually possessed a fondness for Shakespearean writing which is why he engaged in such long sentences. Anyone who has read "Moby Dick," as well as "Billy Budd," will quickly recognize how Melville used this style in his work. In addition to the long sentences of the beginning of this chapter, we are also presented with almost a topic change, that throws us off course a bit.
