In all the works of Strindberg, it can
be seen that he draws heavily on the narratives and characters of mythology and the universal themes relating to human tragedy as portrayed by Shakespeare. Some critics have suggested that
as a result of his own somewhat troubled early life, he felt a particular affinity with certain of Shakespeares more tormentd characters such as Hamlet, and that this preoccupation was
apparent in his work. Certainly, many of
his female characters reflect his own relationships with and attitudes towards women, and in general it can be seen that the women in his plays represent the darker side of
the female nature. Rather than stereotyping his female characters as, for instance, whores and evil mothers, he draws on specific women from mythology and history such as Clytemnestra, Lady Macbeth,
Circe and Medusa. In The Father,
the interaction between the patriarchal figure and the women in the family reflects his fascination with the way in which male characters are driven by an antagonistic interaction with the
female. The indecisiveness of Hamlet, for instance, and the way in which his actions never achieve his desires due to his own inadequacy and his reluctance to destroy his mother,
