reminiscing about the "miracle on ice" at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. That miracle was the triumph of a relatively inexperienced (at least in terms of
the "big leagues") group of college hockey players who took on the mighty hockey team of the Soviet Union . . . and won. Glasser (2002) dubs Herb Brooks, who
was the teams coach, as the "architect" of the miracle (pp. 59). When Brooks was asked to return as the 2002 U.S. Olympic teams coach and then asked why he
was willing to do it, he replied: "Obviously, we all have a little boy in us. Competition is a big factor, and representing my country is a big motivation" (pp.
59). In case anybody should think that Brooks success with the Olympic team was a fluke, Murphy (1988) explains that along with being one of the University of Minnesotas
all-time great players: "As coach at the University of Minnesota from 1972 to 79, he took the Gophers to three NCAA titles" (pp. 34). What is also particularly notable about
Brooks and his coaching talent and style is that it serves as an example of the power of truly transformational leadership and what it means to be a transformational leader.
Transformational Leadership It is important to understand that leadership is not an attitude of style or some sort of business "disguise." Rather it is a state of being in
which the ultimate conclusion is the melding of multiple agendas, personalities, and motivation toward a single and common goal. Successful leadership is the result of one person or a
