Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) is responsible for approximately 8,000 to 10,000 deaths each year in the United Statesi. Prior to the 1980s, few people had even
heard of it1 (p.24). The virus is spread primarily through contact with the blood of someone who already has the infection 1(p.24). In general, many people do not know that
they carry the virus as they have no symptoms or just vague ones 1(p.24). Symptoms of HCV include fatigue, nausea, muscle and joint pain, a poor appetite, and mild stomach
symptoms 1(p.24). While to some HCV is deadly, to others it is no cause for alarm. About 15% of those who contract the disease have a short-lived infection which goes
away, but the other 85% are chronically infected1(p.24). In the latter case, the virus stays in the liver and replicates and this can cause the virus to slowly affect the
organ over time1 (p.24). The emergence of hepatitis C is a significant health problem. Bernstein claims that the disease is not threatening to
become an epidemic; it already isii (p.133). Not everyone agrees with that assessment, but certainly HCV is on its way to becoming an epidemic. More and more people are becoming
infected with HCV, and it could reach epidemic proportions soon. Now is the time to do something to help alleviate the problem. If steps are taken today, it is possible
to avoid the spread of HCV in the future or at least it is possible to reduce the problem. Although certain populations are more prone to the disease, because young
