battle as they involve men who must face their fears and insecurities. It is, in many ways, a very powerful coming of age story as the two men learn and
grow through experience. Henry is incredibly inexperienced when he begins the journey in the book, although he maintains his own personal idea of what it will be like, envisioning himself
in different ways as it involves bravery. The following paper examines Henry, arguing that he was courageous in that he faced himself and matured. Henry When we first
see Henry Fleming he is incredibly young and naive. As one author notes, "Calling Henry the youth is the most important indicator that this novel is about his maturity" (ClassicNote).
He is eager to find glory and adventure in battle as he prepares to enlist in the Union army. He leaves his mother and the farm behind, which have always
offered him a sheltered existence. We see his protective mother state the following, providing us with a look at the young mans existence prior to his new ventures: "You
watch out, Henry, an take good care of yerself in this fighting business . . . Dont go a-thinkin you can lick the hull rebel army at the start, because
yeh cant" (Crane 5). In his innocence, however, he sees things differently: "His busy mind for him large pictures extravagant in color, lurid with breathless deeds" are brought to light
when we see his impatient thoughts toward his mothers farewell, and his heroic feelings as he visits his old school" (Crane 5). Henry soon discovers that life in the
military, and in war, is not all he believed it would be. He discovers that life is not very comfortable either. At one point, when all the soldiers are bored
