the modernist period in which James wrote, a number of major social changes altered the way individuals perceived their role in society as a whole. The industrial development of
the late 19th century and the political and economic progress following the turn of the century defined an environment of literary creativity and the focus on the common man as
a central character in the works of many modernist writers. At the same time, many authors, including Henry James, also considered the conflict between the common man and the
still prevalent aristocracy as a thematic component of their work. It can be argued, then, that this focus for James led to his ability to develop psychological realism in
his work. Henry James utilized his depiction of the American aristocrat in Europe, for example, as a primary character in a number of his works, and this is a direct
extension of his attempt to define the dichotomous nature of the modernizing society of the early 20th century and the impact that class conflicts have on defining mans pursuit of
life, love and social presence. Ralph in Portrait of a Lady, for example, is a character capable of demonstrating both the excesses of man and the life of pensive
reflection. The concept of psychological realism is based on the belief that man reacts in certain ways that are a direct extension of culture, society and social standing. As
a result, the characters, for example, in James Wings of a Dove demonstrate a certain emotional perspective because of their class standing, seek out change through monetary gain, and instead
determine an attachment to a wealthy millionairess, that in the end unravels all their plans. This kind of link between emotionality and the status of the individual is clearly
