of her aunt and uncle with whom she will be staying, she quickly becomes the object of much attention and has many suitors interested in her. And yet, in
the end, she rejects their advances based upon her very strong independent nature. When Isabel first decides to go to Europe,
she is enchanted with the idea of being exposed to all kinds of new adventures and experiences. Isabel is determined and willful, but very likeable as well. She
is good-intentioned but is hopeful of finding an exciting, thrilling adventure on her excursion. There are two suitors who immediately take
a liking to Isabell: Lord Warburton, who is very wealthy and leads a very exciting life, and Caspar Goodwood, who is very dashing and debonair. And yet, despite
their most gallant attempts to persuade Isabel to have an interest in them, she rejects both of these suitors, telling them that she doesnt ever want to get married.
She says she doesnt want to be a sheep in the flock, but wants something more for her life (Summary of "Portrait of a Lady", 2004). She wants to
explore and make her own path instead of taking the predictable and traditional route (Summary of "Portrait of a Lady", 2004).
When Isabel finally does decide to marry, she makes a very poor choice in choosing Gilbert Osmond. She believes that she will have a great deal of control in
their union, but this does not happen. She had inherited a great deal of money when her uncle died, and this is mostly what Osmond sees in her.
