They were individuals that were perhaps idealistic in many ways, and often people who came to realize that idealism was not always reflective of what was possible in their world
or their particular society. The following paper compares the character of Isabel from "Portrait of a Lady" and Hyacinth from "Princess Casamassima." Isabel and Hyacinth While these two
characters are different in that they face different problems due to their gender, they are also individuals who are similar in that they are idealistic. Isabel is a woman who
feels that she should be able to live freely, or as freely as she can and as freely as she desires, in a society that constricts women. Hyacinth in a
young man who feels that society is unjust for the poor. They are both individuals who have ideals, who feel that life and society should be different, offering freedom to
people and not oppressing them. In Isabels story she comes to realize that she cannot have any freedoms that she truly wants. She must marry because that is the demands
placed on her by society and her husband essentially marries her because she is wealthy. She slowly finds herself trapped and realizes, with all honesty, that a woman in her
time period has no choices, that she cannot freely move around and do many things before marriage. Society restricts what she can do, and she realizes that in order to
survive she must follow those rules. In the case of Hyacinth, a young man who is from wealthy and poor blood, while he is adamant about the negative nature
of those in power and those with money, he slowly finds himself immersed in the world of the wealthy and he likes it. Hyacinth has made a promise to himself
